Weddings are full of unforgettable moments, but some stand out because they capture the essence of love in a unique way. Julia and Matthew’s wedding was one of those occasions. What made their day truly special was a surprise that brought Julia’s dream to life—a live wedding painting.
The Dream of a Live Wedding Painter
Julia always wanted a live painter at her wedding. She imagined an artist capturing the day’s beauty as it unfolded, creating a piece that would forever hold the emotions and atmosphere of the celebration. Julia’s mother, knew how much this meant to her daughter and decided to make it happen as a surprise wedding gift.
Sue reached out to me to create a mini portrait for Julia and Matthew. The plan was to reveal the surprise during the wedding day itself. The idea was simple but powerful: to bring Julia’s dream to life. During our call, Sue gushed about Matthew and Julia, how proud she was of them both. The wedding was to be at Venue3Two in Grand Rapids, MI. A venue that doesn't just provide a beautiful location for a wedding and celebration but is a profit for non-profit with a mission to aid those who have become victims of human trafficking and to share the love of Christ with them. The fact that Matthew and Julia chose such a beautiful place with an incredible mission shows that their wedding wasn't only about their love for each other, but shows their generous hearts for those who need love most. No doubt that Sue's pride for these two wonderful people is justified!
The Perfect Moment at Venue3two
Venue3Two, with its historic charm and stunning architecture, was the perfect setting for this surprise. The couple was asked to pose on the venue’s iconic curved staircase, thinking it was just for photos. As they ascended, I stepped forward and announced that this moment was actually for me to capture reference photos which would become the basis for their Live Painting.
Sue was hidden just around the corner, watching Julia’s reaction. The bride was speechless, her eyes wide with disbelief. For several moments, she couldn’t believe her dream was coming true right before her eyes. The surprise was genuine and heartfelt, a rare moment of pure joy. Brook from Brooklyn Fryers Photography stood at the base of the stairway capturing the beautiful moment.

Painting in Natural Light
The large windows of Venue3Two filled the space with sunlight, creating ideal lighting for painting. As the sun began to set, the warm glow enhanced the colors and shadows, giving the portrait a natural vibrancy that studio lighting could never replicate.
I started with reference photos taken during the surprise moment, then moved to the easel to begin the painting. Friends and family gathered around, watching as brushstroke after brushstroke brought the image to life. The live painting became a form of entertainment, a shared experience that connected everyone present.
The Impact of a Live Painting as a Wedding Gift
This surprise was more than just a painting. It was a symbol of love and thoughtfulness from Sue to Julia and Matthew. The live painting captured not only the couple’s likeness but also the emotions of the day—the excitement, the love, and the joy shared by everyone.
Personalized gifts like this add a meaningful layer to weddings. They create memories that last beyond the day itself. For Julia and Matthew, the portrait will always remind them of that special moment on the staircase, the surprise, and the warmth of their family and friends.
Final Strokes of a Beautiful Day

As the painting neared completion, the crowd’s excitement grew. The final brushstrokes brought out the couple’s expressions and the soft light of the afternoon sky. Julia’s dream had become a reality, thanks to her mother’s thoughtful surprise and the wonder of live art.
This experience shows how art can deepen the meaning of a wedding day. It creates a connection between the past and the future, capturing a moment that will be cherished for years to come.
